The application deadline for SURF 2020 is February 20, 2020.  Please come to one of our info sessions, starting in October 2019.

For those of you thinking of applying for summer 2020, we strongly encourage you to do all of the following this fall and winter:

  • Attend one of our SURF info sessions
  • Closely read through this website so that you fully understand the eligibility requirements for SURF, and the specifications for the specific SURF-SMART project you are applying to
  • Beginning in January, make an appointment with the appropriate SURF advisor to discuss your application (we recommend meeting with an advisor whose research experience- Humanities/Social Science, Life Science, or Physical Science- matches the disciplinary focus of the project you are applying to)
  • You may not apply to other SURF applicant pools if you are applying to SURF-SMART

The SMART (Student Mentoring and Research Teams) wing of SURF is a summer program designed to foster undergraduate research through mentoring. Undergraduate fellows work on graduate student-led research projects. Each undergraduate fellow will receive a summer stipend in the amount of $3,500-5,000 over the course of summer 2020. Undergraduate students should note that this stipend may affect the amount of financial aid they are eligible to receive in summer 2020.

To be eligible to apply for this program, you must meet the following criteria:

  1. You must be a UC Berkeley undergraduate student who is currently pursuing a UC Berkeley undergraduate degree. Please note that visiting students are not eligible to apply.
  2. You must be in good academic standing at the time of application.
  3. Undergraduate students from any UC Berkeley academic department or program are eligible to apply; students who have not yet declared their majors are also eligible to apply. Students who will graduate in December 2019 or in May 2020 are not eligible to apply.
  4. If you applied in the past and were not selected to be a SMART mentee, you are welcome to apply again. Former SMART mentees are not eligible to apply.

Instructions for Applying to SURF-SMART:

  • Submit a current resume or curriculum vitae (“cv”). We strongly recommend asking a SURF advisor and/or trusted mentor to take a look at it before you submit. Please also keep in mind that your resume or cv should highlight those skill sets and experiences that best speak to those reflected in the project’s description.
  • Complete the application essay within the specified word limit (link will be available once the application opens). In your essay, you must indicate which graduate student-led research project you are applying for. Please note that you may only apply to one research project. Your essay should directly and specifically address how your interests, skill sets, and past experiences make you a good fit for the project you are applying to. Keep in mind that the graduate student advisor who will be assessing your application is looking for your demonstrated potential to fulfill the research tasks he/she is looking for.
  • The application deadline is February 2020. Note that you will have to be logged into UC Berkeley Bmail (your campus email account) to see and use this application link. Use this link (will be available soon) to submit your completed application including relevant information and uploading the required documents that we request.
