Applications for SURF L&S 2024 are due by 11:59 AM (Pacific Time) on
Friday, March 1, 2024.

Draft workshops to support applicants from each disciplinary area (e.g., Arts & Humanities, Social Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Math & Physical Sciences) are being offered by SURF mentors throughout the month of February.

Please note: The Application Portal will automatically close at 12noon on March 1, so use the worksheets below to prepare you materials in advance and do not wait until the last minute to enter your responses in the portal.

Applying To SURF

The application portal for SURF L&S 2024 is now live. Please note that the same application form is used for SURF L&S, the Haas Scholars Program, and Rose Hills Summer Scholarships.  If you are applying to any of these programs, we strongly encourage you to attend one of the Information Sessions (or if you missed them, review the slides and recording). Please also plan to attend a research proposal drafting workshop in February to get guidance and feedback on your project. In the meantime, you may use the worksheet below to begin preparing your application and research proposal for SURF L&S 2024. When you are ready to submit, click on the blue application portal link. It is important to complete the application in a single session, so it is important to have drafted your responses and proposal using the worksheets provided to avoid losing any data. Please Note: To access the application materials (both the portal and worksheets), you must login from a bMail (berkeley.edu) account. Students external to UC Berkeley are ineligible for these programs.

Application Questionnaire PDF

Important: Please note that the version of this pdf posted before 6 February contained errors in the word/character counts specified for both the ‘Background and Rationale’ and ‘Research Plan and Timeline’ sections. Although these have been corrected now, we recommend drafting your research proposal in the ‘Research Proposal Worksheet’ below. If you made a copy of the pdf before February 6, please check to make sure you are observing the corrected word/character counts for those sections.
